The mission of NICE is to promote peace, reconciliation and mutual understanding between the communities of Northern Ireland.

Award Winners

Our youth volunteer awards started six years ago when the New England Colonials Basketball Club wanted to show their appreciation to Paul McCrory - a founder member of NICE in Northern Ireland and a teacher at St. Malachy's who had organised and hosted basketball tournaments in Belfast for them. They thought it would be a fitting tribute to name an award in his honour and so the idea of celebrating the commitment of our youth volunteers was born.

We wanted to honour our Chairman in New York, Don Murphy, in a similar way and an award was named in his honour, these two awards are voted for by the youth volunteers themselves.

The last award, the 'NICE Endeavour Award', is one given to the volunteer who in the opinion of the NICE staff has put in that extra special effort.

The awards are given out at the end of the youth volunteers' year, usually at the summer barbeque.

I had been involved in other cross-community programmes before, and I thought it would be good for my CV. It would also be a chance to meet new people and see things. Also the lure of formal dates and tee shirts lured me!

I heard about NICE through my sisters who went away with NICE to Ballycastle through the EMU programme at Seymour Hill PS. I then became a volunteer when I was 17. I wanted to work with children and offer my skills to NICE.

I became involved in October 2002 after hearing about NICE in a school assembly. I wanted to help give young people from Belfast an opportunity to learn about themselves and other cultures. What I didn't realise was how much I would learn from them!

I joined NICE when I was a youth volunteer in Lr sixth in St. Malachy's College. Being from England and living on the Falls Road, and going to St. Malachy's I became increasingly interested in the political situation and wanted to help change things.

I first got involved in NICE when I was 11 years old. My younger sister went to America with NICE and was invited to go on a follow up to Ballycastle, I decided to tag along. I certainly didn't think I would still be part of NICE 10 years later.
