Citizenship Awards

13/11/2008

Young people, from schools throughout Lisburn and Belfast, came together at Belfast’s Farset International recently to receive their certificates for successfully completing a Community Relations Citizenship course.

Accredited by Open College Network, the course is delivered by N.I. Childrens Enterprise in fifteen schools in the Lisburn and Belfast areas. The course, entitled ‘Citizenship In A Divided Society’, is delivered to young people in Year 13 and gets them to look at their values and beliefs; their stereotypes, assumptions and judgements, and how best to deal with conflict.

Schools attending the presentation ceremony included Friends School, St. Genevieve’s High School, St. Louise’s College, St. Malachy’s College and Wallace High School.

Lisburn City’s Mayor – Councillor Ronnie Crawford - who praised the work of N.I. Children’s Enterprise and also the accomplishments of the young people, presented the certificates.

Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson, MLA and Lagan Valley MP, was the guest speaker at the event. He talked about the reconciliation process within Northern Ireland and the part we all had to play in this process, and also praised the work of the young people receiving this community relations award.

Our Schools Community Relations Programme Co-ordinator, Alison Dougherty, was very pleased with the event.
“To see so many young people together here today to receive their community relations certificates is extremely rewarding. I have seen a steady increase in the demand for delivery of programmes such as ours, and more schools are regularly coming on board, wanting to offer an accredited Community Relations course to their pupils.

As we are always encouraging the young people to get more involved with their community and know our local politicians, I was particularly delighted that Lisburn’s Mayor, Councillor Ronnie Crawford, and Junior Minister, Jeffrey Donaldson, were able to attend. The young people had a chance to chat with them informally after the awards, and meet one of the Ministers who have responsibility for children and young people’s issues”.
