Level 1 Citizenship Awards

27/05/2010

Northern Ireland Children’s Enterprise celebrated another term of Citizenship achievements, with an Awards Ceremony at Belfast's Farset International recently. Over eighty young people, from various schools throughout Lisburn and Belfast, were awarded their Open College Network certificates in Citizenship. Also in attendance was Belfast's Lord Mayor - Councillor Naomi Long. A BBC news crew filmed a secion of the event, and we were featured in the BBC 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock news that evening! This was great publicity for us! Anyone interested in finding out what Community Relations courses and activities are available from NI Childrens Enterprise, can contact Alison on 9066 8867.

New 'Change Makers' Project!

01/07/2010

‘Change Makers’ is a new and exciting 3-year project starting on 1 July 2010. It is a collaborative approach by three organisations: - Belfast YMCA, Community Relations in Schools (CRIS), and Northern Ireland Children’s Enterprise (NICE).

The three organisations have come together and created a community relations / citizenship programme for primary and post primary schools, in the Lisburn and Greater Belfast area.

‘Change Makers’ vision is for schools to develop a community relations model embracing the whole school community, allowing for community relations to be developed and embedded within the culture of the schools.

Our aim is for every teacher and pupil in every school to have the confidence and capacity to engage and develop understanding with those that may be perceived as the ‘other’ community, allowing us to move to a place where we are at ease with difference.

The project will deliver a project that will engage with 10 schools in the Lisburn and Greater Belfast areas. Schools will engage in a twinning and wider collaborative approach. The process will engage all pupils at some level throughout the lifetime of the project, in community relations’ programmes.

This model will also enable a strategic group of young Change Makers from each school to come together and develop their community relations’ knowledge and skills alongside leadership development. This will be done on three levels: individually, in a whole school context and collaboratively with partner schools.

Funding for the project has been approved from the International Fund For Ireland Programme ‘Sharing in Education’, which will cover costs associated with this 3-year programme.
